As of July 31, 2010, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has discontinued service to and from Sea-Tac Airport. SAS played an important role in Sea-Tac Airport history. In 1966, they became first airline to offer direct service from Sea-Tac to Europe and had offered service from Sea-Tac to Scandinavia for the past 44 years.
Icelandair has filled SAS' spot at Sea-Tac. The airline offers non-stop service to Reykjavik four times weekly with plans to offer a fifth flight in 2011. Icelandair is now the only Nordic airline offering direct service from the West Coast.
The Port of Seattle Fire Department helped celebrate Iceland Air's inaugural flight at Sea-Tac with a traditional water salute. The celebration also included a champagne toast with top Icelandair management and members of the national delegation from Iceland. Icelandair flies an all Boeing fleet.
Lloyd O'Hara, the Port of Seattle Commissioner, made a statement regarding the occasion: "At a time when our economy is struggling to rebound, it's a pleasure to celebrate good economic news. As the most trade dependent state in the country, welcoming Icelandair to Sea-Tac encourages and increases our potential for additional trade and tourism."
Iceland, known as the land of "fire and ice", is an outstanding tourist destination. An island nation in the Atlantic Ocean between Greenland and Europe, Iceland has lush green meadows, magnificent glaciers, and more than two-dozen active volcanoes. Its capital city of Reykjavik is a beautiful seaside town of 120,000 with near twenty-four hour daylight during the summers.
Icelandair's flights have scheduled departures from Sea-Tac at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays and arrive in Reykjavik at 6:45 a.m. the following day. Passengers can also take connecting flights from Reykjavik to cities that include Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Munich, Oslo, and Paris. Flights from Reykjavik to Sea-Tac depart on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 5:00 p.m. and arrive in Sea-Tac at 5:45 p.m. the same day.
Be sure to book your flight well in advance and see our page on Sea-Tac Parking coupons to save on airport parking.
